Job Description

The Pump Repair Technician/Mechanic is essential to the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and testing of electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, generators, and rotating equipment that power critical, heavy industry applications.

Key Responsibilities:

Inspection & Disassembly

  • Disassemble and inspect centrifugal, gear, vane, piston, diaphragm, submersible, and other industrial pump types
  • Identify mechanical, hydraulic, and sealing issues through thorough troubleshooting
  • Inspect impellers, casings, wear rings, shafts, bearings, mechanical seals, packing, and wear plates for damage, erosion, or excessive wear
  • Evaluate pump performance against original specifications using flow, pressure, and efficiency data

Repair & Rebuild

  • Clean, repair, or replace components such as impellers, wear rings, shaft sleeves, bearings, mechanical seals, packing, gaskets, and related mechanical parts
  • Perform sleeve installation, and bearing replacement to restore proper tolerances
  • Recondition or replace casings, volutes, and wear plates as required
  • Conduct dynamic balancing of rotating assemblies including impellers and shaft assemblies
  • Reassemble pumps according to OEM specifications, ensuring proper clearances, torque values, and alignment
  • Perform hydrostatic and operational testing of rebuilt pumps to verify performance and integrity prior to return to service
  • Align pump-to-motor or pump-to-driver coupling using laser or dial indicator alignment methods

Documentation & Quality

  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and labor time
  • Ensure all work meets company quality standards and safety regulations
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with company policies

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of gear theory, power transmission systems, and lubrication principles
  • Proficiency with gearbox-specific hand and power tools, including torque wrenches, bearing pullers, and press equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret OEM service manuals, assembly drawings, cross-sectional blueprints, and gear geometry specifications
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments including micrometers, dial indicators, feeler gauges, and calipers
  • Familiarity with gear types (helical, bevel, worm, planetary, spur) and their respective failure modes
  • Understanding of lubrication systems, oil viscosity requirements, and contamination analysis
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane (or willingness to be trained)
  • Commitment to company policies, procedures, and safety standard

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical or vocational training in mechanical technology, power transmission, or related field preferred
  • Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience with industrial gearbox repair or power transmission maintenance preferred
