Job Description

Hours of Operation:
M-F, 8am-8pm
Sat/Sun, 8am-4pm

Urgent Care offers shift differentials for all shifts:

$2.00 per hour during regular business hours
$4.00 per hour after 5pm and weekends

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Assists in the examination and treatment of patients by tracking patient information, documenting the medical record, assisting with in-office procedures and testing, administering medications and providing patient and caregiver education. Duties are performed under the oversight and direction of professional clinical staff and providers as outlined in the Clinical Support Staff Scope of Practice document.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Performs all Essential Job Functions from Medical Assistant II job description.
  2. Maintains proficiency on completed required activities within MA-Credentialed II position.
  3. Assumes additional duties:
    1. Assists provider with more complex patient care issues.
    2. Successfully serves as consistent MA preceptor for new and existing MA's:
      1. Precepts/Onboards new MA's per Preceptor Program Requirements.
      2. Assists with ongoing training of existing staff; identifies gaps in skills; completes annual clinical proficiency assessments.
    3. Updates procedure manual and creates and manages workflows.
    4. System superuser; relays information to clinical team.
    5. Performs designated responsibilities related to regulatory oversight of Lab.
    6. Represents office at respective clinical leadership meetings.
    7. Serves as resource for staff engaged in similar functions.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. Successful completion of accredited/approved MA program and MA Externship, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program, Paramedic program or Certified Athletic Trainer. Maintains current MA Re-Certification CEUs.

CREDENTIALS/LICENSURE: Valid CPR certification.


Certification as a Medical Assistant through one of the following certifying agencies:

  • American Association of Medical Assistants (CMA)
  • American Medical Technologists (RMA)
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCMA)
  • National Healthcareer Association (CCMA)
  • National Association of Health Professionals (NRCMA)
  • American Medical Certification Association (CMAC)

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 3+ years' experience working as a credentialed MA with skills/education required from MA-II role.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS (ABILITIES & SKILLS):
  1. Has attained required management sponsorship to advance to the MA III-Credentialed level.
  2. Ability to perform all MA-II Essential Job Functions.
  3. Demonstrated competency in obtaining accurate patient vital statistics (height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, etc.) and patient health history.
  4. Proficient/knowledgeable in medical terminology.
  5. Proficiency in operating a standard desktop and Windows-based computer system, including but not limited to, electronic medical records, email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required while performing the essential functions of the job.
  6. Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal forms, including proper phone etiquette.
  7. Ability to speak before groups of people, either in-person or virtually.
  8. Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment; courteous and friendly demeanor.
  9. Ability to work effectively with various levels of organizational members and diverse populations including IHA staff, providers, patients, vendors, family members, outside customers and community groups.
  10. Ability to cross-train in other areas of practice in order to achieve smooth flow of all operations.
  11. Good organizational and time management skills to effectively juggle multiple priorities, time constraints and ever-changing medical situations.
  12. Ability to exercise sound judgement and problem-solving skills.
  13. Ability to perform mathematical calculations needed during the course of performing basic job duties, i.e.: calculating proper dosages for immunizations.
  14. Knowledge of the compliance aspects of clinical care and patient privacy and best practices in medical office operations.
  15. Ability to handle patient and organizational information in a confidential manner.
  16. Ability to monitor, organize, stock, prepare and keep exam rooms clean; maintain medical supply inventory in clinical areas.
  17. Ability to travel to other office/practice sites and meeting and training locations.
  18. Successful completion of IHA competency-based program within introductory and training period.
MINIMUM PHYSICAL EXPECTATIONS:
  1. Physical activity that often requires keyboarding, phone work and charting.
  2. Physical activity that often requires time working on a computer.
  3. Physical activity that often requires lifting over 50 lbs.
  4. Physical activity that often requires handling and lifting patients, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, kneeling and/or twisting.
  5. Physical activity that sometimes requires lifting, pushing and/or pulling up to 100 lbs.
  6. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust and focus.
  7. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment.
  8. Must hear and speak well enough to conduct business over the telephone or face to face for long periods of time in English.

MINIMUM ENVIRONMENTAL EXPECTATIONS :

This job operates in a medical facility and requires regular walking to various locations around the hospital/clinic. Employees will be working where there is patient care equipment. Hazardous materials, including bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids are also present. Exposure to sharps, x-rays, patients' conditions and some unpleasant sights, smells and contagious diseases are possible. This position requires significant interaction with people (many of whom are scared, hurt and/or ill) which can be stressful and result in competing priorities.
