Purpose: "Protect Life; Preserve Property; Honor Humanity"

Brief Description Responsible for ensuring the protection of residents and property from fire and other emergencies while providing emergency medical treatment and other services in support of the Department Purpose and Mission.

General Statement of Duties

Under general supervision to engage in fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, fire prevention activities to protect life and property; to operate and maintain firefighting apparatus and equipment; set up hoses, ladders and use equipment to fight fires; participate in fire training and proficiency drills, the study of firefighting science and techniques; maintenance of facilities and other related work as required. At times, it may be necessary for a Firefighter to work temporary duty as a Fire Engineer. The Firefighter is responsible for the full duties and the responsibilities of the job description for the temporary assigned position.

This is a full-time position requiring significant physical ability and mental alertness. Requires the ability to work shifts and contribute to a team approach in carrying out the duties.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to comprehend and perform the essential job functions
  • Ability to understand and utilize situational awareness to mitigate emergency incidents and protect personal safety and the safety of others
  • Skill and ability to maintain customer service as an operational priority
  • Skill and ability to operate all Department equipment in a safe manner
  • Knowledge of basic skills of firefighting, methods, and techniques used in modern firefighting for protection of life and property and how to render medical aid as required
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement and operate under the Incident Command System
  • Ability to drive fire apparatus, placing it at a fire; connects to fire hydrant, operates pumps to maintain desired pressures to support fire suppression activities
  • Ability to analyze fire and driving situations, and adopt effective courses of action for them
  • Possess physical strength, endurance, agility, and ability to produce extreme effort and energy for periods of time in highly stressful situations, retaining presence of mind, working as a team member to mitigate an emergency
  • Ability to train fire personnel, city employees and civilians
  • Ability to observe evidence at the scene and report findings to lieutenant and/or chain of command
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and witnesses
  • Ability to remain calm and cooperative in difficult or emergency situations
  • Knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry, and mechanics
  • Ability to learn, retain and apply technical information, terminology, and guidelines
  • Ability to keep simple records and prepare reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and the public
  • Ability to deal effectively with individuals under stress
  • Knowledge and ability to locate and respond to calls for service

Education and Experience

Must have obtained the number of credit hours from an accredited University or College as required by the City of Cleburne Firefighters' and Police Officers' Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations.

Must take and pass the City of Cleburne's Civil Service written exam.

Certificates and Licenses Required

A Valid Class B Texas Commercial driver license within one hundred and eighty (180) days of employment and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record.

Must acquire and maintain a basic Firefighter certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection within six (6) months of hire date. The time frame may be extended due to class availability or staffing concerns.

Must acquire and maintain a Paramedic certification or license from the Texas Department of State Health Services within eighteen (18) months of hire date. The time frame may be extended due to class availability or staffing concerns.

Environmental Factors and Safety Hazards

Primarily in an outdoor environment with the ability to operate indoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during summer and winter months.

  • Personal protective equipment, including breathing apparatus
  • Various hand tools, including but not limited to pike pole, Halligan bar, axe, sledgehammer, shovel, scoop, spade, squeegee, broom, and other small hand tools
  • Multiple types and sizes of hoses, nozzles, and hose appliances
  • Various fire apparatus including engines, ambulances, brush trucks, rescue trucks, and quints
  • Medical Equipment to include a cardiac monitor, airway kit, and medical kit
  • Extrication spreaders, cutters, rams, and the associated power plant
  • Multiple sizes and configurations of ground ladders
  • Various motorized and electric powered tools such as ventilation fans, chainsaws, and metal cutting rotary saws
  • Patient carrier devices such as stair chair and stretcher both loaded and unloaded
  • Standard office equipment including multi-line telephone, computer, tablet, copier, scanner, printer, etc.
