Data Engineer I

The Data Engineer I will join CNN's Data Analytics, Science, and Insights team and help support the data foundation that powers reporting, analysis, and insights across our publishing and media business. In this role, you will work alongside experienced data engineers, analysts, and product teams to help deliver clean, reliable datasets related to user behavior, content performance, advertising revenue, and subscriptions. This is an ideal opportunity for someone early in their data engineering career who is eager to learn, grow, and make a real impact in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment.

Your role accountabilities include:

  • Support data analysts with data requests and help answer questions about available datasets
  • Contribute to the development of data models that support reporting on content performance, user engagement, subscriber lifecycle, and advertising revenue
  • Help monitor pipeline performance and escalate data issues as they arise
  • Document data definitions, business logic, and pipeline processes to support team knowledge sharing
  • Write and run data quality tests with guidance from senior engineers

Qualifications and experience include:

  • 1–2 years of experience in a data engineering, analytics engineering, or similar technical data role (internship or co‑op experience counts)
  • Solid foundational SQL skills and comfort working with structured and semi‑structured data
  • Familiarity with Python for data processing
  • Familiarity with version control tools (e.g., Git)
  • Exposure to cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake)
  • Awareness of ETL/ELT tools or orchestration frameworks such as dbt, Airflow, or Prefect
  • Awareness of data privacy considerations
  • Basic understanding of relational data modeling concepts
  • Basic understanding of how data supports editorial, product, and business decisions in a media environment
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative mindset
  • Eagerness to learn and grow within a supportive team environment

Nice to have:

  • Experience with web analytics platforms (e.g., Google Analytics, Adobe Analytics)
  • Experience with BI tools (e.g., Looker)
  • Familiarity with dimensional modeling concepts (e.g., star/snowflake schemas, slowly changing dimensions)
  • Knowledge of digital ad tech (e.g., Google Ad Manager, programmatic platforms)
  • Interest in journalism, publishing, or digital media trends
  • Coursework, bootcamp, or project experience in data engineering or analytics

Why join us?

  • You'll help support the data foundation for a modern media company that values data‑informed storytelling and business strategy
  • Work with a collaborative, mission‑driven team that spans editorial, product, and revenue
  • Use a modern data stack and contribute to a growing data culture
  • Grow your skills with mentorship from senior engineers and exposure to a full modern data stack
