This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program, which allows research staff to collaborate with academic institutions on mutual projects. Employees in this role will perform technical work that supports the scientific research of partnered collaborations. Research Title Research Workflow Engineer (RWE) The work will entail the design, development, testing, and deployment of a pipeline to accommodate common research data workflows. The RWE will work with the NIST research data infrastructure team to connect existing systems and processes, creating a scalable and auditable data movement pipeline. Considerations include data source/destination attributes, data sensitivity levels, and access control. Key Responsibilities Develop an understanding of the systems and processes of typical research data workflow. Design, develop, test, and deploy a workflow system that integrates with existing components to achieve a scalable and auditable data movement pipeline. Incorporate data orchestration and movement using tools such as Apache Airflow, Kafka, or Dagster (or other suitable alternatives). Attend and present results at the weekly Research Data Infrastructure meetings. Ensure that results, protocols, software, and documentation are archived or transmitted to the larger organization. Participate in regular meetings with NIST staff. Qualifications A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field. 2–3 years of relevant experience. Familiarity with DevOps and CI/CD pipelines. Experience working with real‑time event data at scale. Proficiency with multiple scripting languages. Ability to develop prototypes of tools needed to analyze data. Strong oral and written communication skills. Salary Range Paid by Johns Hopkins University, based on a fair market range with minimum and maximum salaries reflecting candidate experience, location, and other factors.
